The (extremely odd) universal microphone/headphone combo jack on this model requires a minor configuration change to function. Perform the following steps:

  1. Press ctrl-alt-t to open a terminal
  2. Type "sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf"
  3. Scroll to the bottom and add a new line at the end "options snd-hda-intel model=lifebook"
  4. Save and close the document
  5. Reboot
